Observation Focused On Learner Characteristics
With the cooperating teachers' assistance, identify a student who is either performing below grade level or is identified as special needs. Position yourself so you can observe the student. Observe the student for several segments of the class period. This will include behaviors prior to instruction, during teacher input, during group activities, during class discussions, participation in guided applications, engagement in independent work, reviews or activities designed to check student work or testing. Take notes to document your observation. Use your notes to complete the following form. Following your observation, write a reflective summary that generally describes the students' attributes and behaviors. Describe what you perceive to be the students' academic needs and interest. Describe what the teacher does to address these commonalities and differences. What are the implications for you if you were the classroom teacher?
